Garry Lyons

Garry Lyons is an award-winning playwright, screenwriter and producer.  His theatre work includes: FRANKIE AND TOMMY (Lyric Hammersmith and Liverpool Everyman), WICKED YAAR! (National Theatre and UK tour) and MOHICANS (Donmar Warehouse). His adaptation of THE SECRET GARDEN played to packed houses at West Yorkshire Playhouse and Birmingham Rep.  His most recent plays are THE LAST SEAM (Cast, Doncaster) and BLOW DOWN (Leeds Playhouse/Theatre Royal Wakefield).

 

His television credits include: the Prix Europa-nominated BRITAIN’S FIRST SUICIDE BOMBERS (Chameleon Television/BBC 2); the RTS award-winning DECISIONS (Chameleon/Channel 4) and episodes of THE BILL (Talkback Thames), HEARTBEAT (YTV), SOLDIER, SOLDIER (Central TV/ITV 1), CHILDREN’S WARD (Granada), and CHALKFACE (BBC 2).  His single dramas for television include MOHICANS (YTV/ITV 1) and THE DREAM KITCHEN (Channel 4).  For children, he has written for THE WORST WITCH (Global Arts/ITV1), the Bafta-nominated series screened in more than 60 countries including on HBO, and its spin-off shows WEIRDSISTER COLLEGE (Global Arts/ITV 1) and THE NEW WORST WITCH (Global Arts/ITV 1).

Garry also writes for radio. Credits include DISTANT WHISPERS (BBC Radio 4) and AMAZONIA with Rory Kinnear and Michelle Dockery (Crosslab Productions/BBC Radio 3).  From 2006 to 2020 he was Director of the MA Writing for Performance and Publication at Leeds University, which he launched and ran in partnership with Leeds Playhouse.  In recent years, he has taught dramatic writing as far afield as the USA, Australia, New Zealand, India, China and numerous countries in Europe. He was a co-founder of the International Screenwriting Research Network, and in 2013 was awarded a Harry Ransom Humanities Fellowship by the University of Texas-Austin.
