A huge congratulations are in order for Mike Kenny, who received a Royal Philharmonic Society Music Award for CALDERLAND - A PEOPLE'S OPERA in the category of Learning and Participation. Mike was there to receive the award in person at the ceremony last night that was held at The Royal Albert Hall in London.
CALDERLAND, staged by 509 Arts, traced the area's relationship with water, going back from the Industrial Revolution to the devastating floods in 2015. The Royal Philharmonic Society judges said they were "particularly struck by the inclusive nature of the workshop and rehearsal process" and by the "clear evidence that the project has created an energetic musical legacy". They added: "With a compelling narrative and sophisticated musical language, this is the kind of artistic experience that changes lives." Mike wrote the libretto for the piece whilst Richard Taylor wrote the music. We're very proud of their work!
